  • 200+ teaching vacancies causing disruptions in academic quality and services.
  • Over 500 vacant posts across departments affecting university operations.

Kashmir University is grappling with a critical staff shortage, with over 500 vacant posts across various departments, as revealed in a Right to Information (RTI) response. The university had nearly 20% of its sanctioned positions unfilled till February 2024, including many important teaching and administrative roles, which could significantly impact the quality of education and services offered.

Massive Teaching Faculty Vacancies

According to the RTI petition filed by Jammu-based activist Raman Kumar Sharma, the university faces a particularly dire situation in its teaching staff. Over 200 key teaching positions, including professors, associate professors, and assistant professors, are vacant. There are 47 vacant professor positions out of 56, with 91 associate professors and 80 assistant professors missing from the faculty lineup. These vacant posts are scattered across various departments, leaving many academic areas under-staffed and students potentially facing delayed courses or less attention from qualified instructors.

The shortage of faculty has already affected the day-to-day functioning of many departments. The Institute of Music and Fine Arts, for example, has no principal and only three out of its seven senior teachers. As a result, students in these fields face limited academic guidance and a lack of leadership. The absence of a strong faculty network is proving to be a significant challenge in maintaining the university’s academic standards.

Administrative and Other Vacancies

In addition to teaching staff, the university is also facing a shortage of administrative personnel. There are five vacant director positions out of seven, which hampers the functioning of several key departments. Other important administrative posts, such as joint registrars, deputy registrars, assistant registrars, and technical staff, also remain vacant, creating a bottleneck in the efficient functioning of the institution.

Vacant positions extend beyond academic and administrative departments. There are also critical vacancies in student welfare, physical education, and nursing departments, which are essential for the holistic development of students. These ongoing staffing issues raise concerns about the university’s capacity to provide a conducive learning environment and meet the educational needs of its growing student population.

The RTI revelations have brought attention to the alarming staffing crisis at Kashmir University, which, if not addressed promptly, could affect its ability to provide quality education and adequate student services.
