Kangana Ranaut, the Bollywood actress and BJP Member of Parliament, has found herself at the center of a legal controversy regarding her film “Emergency.” A district court in Chandigarh has issued a notice to Kangana Ranaut following a complaint that accuses her film of maligning the Sikh community. The complaint was filed by Advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi, who claims that “Emergency” depicts Sikhs in a derogatory manner and contains several inaccuracies about the community.
The film, which Kangana Ranaut both directs and stars in, portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the emergency period she declared in 1975. Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, have expressed strong objections, alleging that the film distorts historical facts and misrepresents the Sikh community. This has led to widespread criticism and calls for a case to be filed against Kangana Ranaut.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 5, 2024, to further examine the matter. Kangana Ranaut’s film, co-produced by Zee Studios and her production company Manikarnika Films, has been marred by delays. Initially slated for release last year, its debut was postponed to June 2024 and then again to September 6 due to complications, including the Lok Sabha elections and issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film has yet to receive approval from the CBFC, casting uncertainty on its release date.
In a related development, Kangana Ranaut recently revealed that the delay in the film’s release has forced her to sell her Mumbai property. The actress reportedly sold her bungalow in Pali Hill, Bandra, for ₹32 crore, citing financial pressures caused by the postponed release. She had previously stated that she had invested her personal property into the film, which was meant to hit theatres by now.
The film also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman in significant roles. The controversy surrounding “Emergency” continues to escalate, with legal and political ramifications for Kangana Ranaut. As the film remains embroiled in dispute, Kangana Ranaut’s legal battles and financial setbacks add further complexity to the film’s troubled journey to the screen.
In response to the ongoing delays, Zee Entertainment Enterprises had approached the Bombay High Court earlier this month, seeking urgent relief to expedite the film’s clearance. However, the court did not grant any immediate relief, leaving the film’s release still uncertain.
With the legal and public scrutiny intensifying, the outcome of the court proceedings and the film’s eventual release remain to be seen.
