After the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance faced a devastating defeat in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, BJP MP and actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut launched a sharp attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai on Sunday, Kangana Ranaut referred to Uddhav Thackeray as a “Daitya (monster)” who “met his fate because he disrespected women.”
Expressing no surprise at MVA’s loss, Kangana Ranaut said, “I expected such a bad failure of Uddhav Thackeray. We can identify who is a ‘devta (god)’ and who is a ‘daitya (monster)’ depending on if they respect women or work for their welfare.”
Kangana Ranaut revisited her controversial clashes with the MVA government during Uddhav Thackeray’s tenure as Chief Minister in 2020. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had demolished parts of her Bandra bungalow, citing illegal alterations. “They demolished my house and even used foul words against me, so it was evident that they had lost their sense of right and wrong,” she said, adding that actions like these come with consequences. Drawing a parallel between Uddhav Thackeray’s political downfall and mythical narratives, she said he faced the same fate as a “daitya.”
The Mandi MP also recounted her earlier comments likening Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and expressing distrust in the Mumbai Police over her safety. These statements had sparked a major controversy during the MVA government’s rule.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena, BJP, and a faction of the NCP, secured a resounding victory in Maharashtra, winning 230 out of 288 seats in the assembly. In contrast, the Congress-led MVA alliance managed to secure just 46 seats, falling significantly short of the numbers required to claim the position of Leader of the Opposition in the assembly. This electoral debacle has dealt a major blow to the opposition’s aspirations of returning to power in the state.
Reacting to the Mahayuti’s sweeping victory, Kangana Ranaut praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “invincible” and asserting that he was born for the “salvation of the country.” She credited the people of Maharashtra for voting decisively for development and stability, emphasizing the electorate’s desire for a government that delivers on its promises. With the MVA’s defeat, Kangana Ranaut’s comments further underline the political fallout of the assembly elections in Maharashtra.
