In West Bengal, political tempers have flared once again after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee issued a bold challenge to senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar, asking them to visit Dankuni without their Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) protection. The remark, made amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, has escalated the political war of words between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP, further deepening tensions across the state’s political landscape.

Kalyan Banerjee’s Sharp Challenge to BJP Leaders

Addressing a public gathering, Kalyan Banerjee launched a direct verbal attack on BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar, daring them to relinquish their CISF security and prove their so-called connection with the common people. “If they truly wish to show that they are one with the people of Bengal, they should surrender their security cover and come to Dankuni,” Kalyan Banerjee declared. His challenge did not stop there. With a provocative tone, he added, “Let’s see if they can even return from there. We will see how Amit Shah takes them out safely. Come, Sukanta and Suvendu, bring your men, we will bring ours too. Come without the police; we will also be there without the police.”

The remarks immediately sparked controversy and invited a strong reaction from BJP circles. Kalyan Banerjee’s comments were interpreted by many as not just a challenge but a veiled threat, given Dankuni’s political sensitivity and the state’s history of intense clashes between TMC and BJP workers. The TMC MP’s fiery speech underscored the charged atmosphere prevailing in Bengal politics, especially as the Election Commission begins the critical exercise of revising voter lists across the state.

Kalyan Banerjee, one of TMC’s most outspoken parliamentarians, accused the BJP leadership of hiding behind a wall of security forces instead of mingling freely with citizens. He alleged that BJP leaders have “no real connect with the people of Bengal” and that their dependence on central security forces shows their lack of confidence in the very people they claim to represent. “They trust their security personnel more than they trust the people,” Kalyan Banerjee said, calling it a “shame for those who boast of being people’s leaders.”

The BJP, however, has dismissed Kalyan Banerjee’s remarks as reckless and irresponsible. Party sources said that the security cover provided to Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar was granted based on intelligence inputs and threat assessments made by central agencies, not at their personal request. A BJP spokesperson accused the TMC of attempting to create a hostile environment and intimidate opposition leaders through such statements. “This kind of language from a sitting MP is unacceptable. It reflects the lawlessness that prevails under TMC’s rule,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, political observers noted that Kalyan Banerjee’s statement was part of a broader TMC strategy to project BJP leaders as outsiders who rely on central protection and fail to engage directly with grassroots realities. For the TMC, which has been asserting its dominance in Bengal’s political narrative since 2011, portraying BJP leaders as disconnected and fearful helps reinforce its image as the party of the people.

The challenge also comes at a time when the TMC is facing multiple fronts of political and administrative tension — from corruption allegations and central investigations to public criticism over governance issues. In such a climate, Kalyan Banerjee’s aggressive rhetoric serves to rally TMC cadres and shift the public conversation toward a familiar theme: the battle between “Delhi’s BJP” and “Bengal’s TMC.”

SIR of Electoral Rolls Sparks Political Firestorm

The controversy over Kalyan Banerjee’s remarks has coincided with the commencement of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, an exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to verify and update voter lists. The revision, which began on November 4, 2025, is being undertaken across 12 Indian states, including West Bengal, and will continue until December 4, 2025. The final electoral roll is expected to be published by February 2026, ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

The SIR involves Block Level Officers (BLOs) visiting households door-to-door to verify voter information, collect or distribute forms, and identify duplicate or ineligible entries. The process is aimed at ensuring greater transparency and accuracy in the voter database. However, in politically charged Bengal, even an administrative exercise like this has become the center of fierce partisan conflict.

The TMC has accused the BJP of using the voter revision process as a means to manipulate the rolls and suppress the voices of genuine voters. Party leaders claim that the revision drive could be exploited to remove names of voters who traditionally support the TMC, particularly in rural areas and minority-dominated regions. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken a strong stance against what she calls the “BJP’s hidden agenda” behind the exercise.

The Chief Minister is set to lead a major protest march in Kolkata on November 4, joined by TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other senior leaders. The rally is expected to draw thousands of supporters, signaling the party’s intent to make the SIR issue a rallying point for mobilization ahead of the next election cycle. The TMC has announced that the protest will not only question the Election Commission’s neutrality but also highlight the alleged misuse of central institutions by the BJP to influence the electoral process.

On the other hand, the BJP has categorically denied all allegations, asserting that the voter list revision is a routine and transparent process undertaken by the Election Commission every few years. BJP leaders have countered that it is the TMC that fears a clean and updated voter list because it would expose large-scale irregularities and fraudulent entries allegedly created by the ruling party over the years. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has claimed that the TMC is trying to politicize an independent constitutional exercise to divert attention from its own failures.

Adhikari has also accused the TMC of orchestrating intimidation campaigns against BLOs and election officials to prevent them from conducting impartial verification. “They are scared of fair elections. That’s why they are attacking the process and spreading misinformation,” he said. The BJP maintains that ensuring a clean voter roll is crucial to protecting democratic integrity in the state, which has often been marred by allegations of booth capturing, rigging, and fake voting.

Election Commission officials, for their part, have urged both parties to refrain from politicizing the process and allow officers to carry out their duties without interference. The Commission has assured that strict guidelines are in place to ensure transparency and accountability. BLOs, according to ECI sources, have been trained to follow proper documentation and verification procedures, and all objections or claims from voters will be duly addressed.

The political polarization surrounding the SIR has also reignited debates about the broader state of democracy in West Bengal. Analysts point out that since the 2021 Assembly elections, political hostility between TMC and BJP has intensified, with both sides accusing each other of undermining democratic institutions. While the BJP alleges administrative bias and voter intimidation under TMC rule, the ruling party accuses the Centre of weaponizing agencies and processes to weaken opposition voices.

In this context, Kalyan Banerjee’s fiery comments serve as an extension of the TMC’s broader political narrative — one that seeks to frame the BJP as an external force dependent on central machinery and protection, while TMC positions itself as the authentic voice of Bengal’s people. The remark also underscores how electoral exercises, which are meant to strengthen democracy, often become battlegrounds for political supremacy in states with deep-rooted rivalries.

As the SIR continues through the month, the political temperature in Bengal is expected to remain high. With the TMC planning street protests and the BJP preparing counter-campaigns to defend the Election Commission’s neutrality, the stage appears set for another round of political confrontation. For voters, however, the immediate concern lies in ensuring that their names remain intact on the rolls — a task that now seems inseparably tied to Bengal’s relentless and deeply polarized politics.
