John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh’s new film Vedaa premiered on August 15, coinciding with Independence Day, alongside notable releases such as Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein and the highly anticipated Stree 2. Despite the competition, Vedaa managed to carve out its niche at the box office, although it fell short compared to the record-breaking performance of Stree 2, which earned nearly Rs 55 crore on its opening day.
According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk, Vedaa collected Rs 6.52 crore on its debut. The film saw an overall Hindi occupancy rate of 35.63 percent. While Vedaa performed better than Khel Khel Mein, which garnered Rs 5 crore, it did not achieve the substantial opening numbers seen in Abraham’s previous Independence Day releases. Batla House (2019) opened with Rs 14 crore, and Satyameva Jayate (2018) made a significant Rs 19.50 crore on its first day. Additionally, Vedaa’s opening figure is also lower than Ek Villain Returns, which earned Rs 7.05 crore.
Directed by Nikkhil Advani, known for his work on Kal Ho Naa Ho, Vedaa delves into the dynamics of a teacher-student relationship and tackles the issue of the caste system in India. Despite its socially relevant theme, the film has not received favorable reviews. Sana Farzeen criticized the film for its slow pace and extended screenplay, noting that while the film’s intentions are commendable, its execution has left audiences feeling disengaged.
The extended weekend, which includes Rakshabandhan on Monday, is anticipated to boost Vedaa’s box office performance, potentially improving its standing in the coming days.
