Outgoing US President Joe Biden issued a stark warning about the future of American democracy during his farewell address delivered from the Oval Office on Wednesday. Speaking ahead of his departure from office next week, Joe Biden cautioned Americans about the rise of oligarchic power, disinformation, and the risks associated with artificial intelligence under an incoming administration led by Donald Trump.

Joe Biden, who has served one term as the nation’s leader, reflected on his administration’s achievements, particularly in navigating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthening international alliances. However, his address was dominated by warnings about a “dangerous concentration of power” in the hands of a wealthy few, which he believes threatens the foundations of American democracy.

The president drew parallels between his concerns and those raised by former President Dwight Eisenhower in his 1961 farewell speech, in which Eisenhower warned of the dangers of an unchecked military-industrial complex. Joe Biden emphasized that today’s threats are similarly insidious, stemming from the growing influence of tech moguls and the ultra-wealthy. Without naming names explicitly, he appeared to reference Elon Musk and other billionaires linked to the incoming administration, asserting that this “extreme concentration of wealth, power, and influence” jeopardizes democratic principles and the rights of ordinary Americans.

Joe Biden also criticized the erosion of press freedoms and the proliferation of disinformation, arguing that these trends enable the abuse of power. “Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation,” he stated. He expressed concern about the decline of traditional media outlets, which he said has left the public vulnerable to manipulation. Joe Biden accused social media platforms of failing in their responsibility to fact-check and hold disinformation at bay, adding, “The truth is smothered by lies told for power and profit. We must hold the social platforms accountable.”

Environmental protections also featured prominently in Joe Biden’s address. He criticized efforts by what he described as “powerful forces” to dismantle measures aimed at combating the climate crisis. These forces, he said, are motivated by their own interests in “power and profit” rather than the well-being of the planet or future generations. Joe Biden highlighted the urgency of addressing global warming and warned that the rollbacks could have catastrophic consequences.

On the topic of artificial intelligence, Joe Biden described it as “the most consequential technology of our time,” capable of delivering enormous benefits but also posing significant risks. He underscored the need for robust oversight to mitigate potential dangers to the economy, security, and society. His comments reflect the growing concern among policymakers and experts about the unregulated development and deployment of AI technologies.

Joe Biden also took the opportunity to note a significant diplomatic achievement under his administration, referencing a ceasefire and hostage deal reached between Hamas and its adversaries after months of negotiation. He positioned this as an example of his commitment to global stability and peace, even amid growing domestic and international challenges.

As he prepares to leave office, Joe Biden faces low approval ratings, though his numbers remain higher than those of both his predecessor and his successor. His farewell address underscores his belief in the importance of vigilance against the forces he sees as threatening democracy. The president’s term will officially conclude on January 20, when Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated.

Joe Biden’s parting message serves as both a reflection on his tenure and a call to action for Americans to safeguard the principles of democracy against rising inequality, environmental neglect, and technological risks. His words leave a clear warning: the challenges ahead demand collective effort and unwavering commitment to the ideals of fairness, truth, and justice.
