Amid widespread criticism over his past remark about “childless cat ladies,” Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance defended his comment, stating it was meant sarcastically. In an interview on The Megyn Kelly Show, JD Vance reaffirmed his belief that having children provides a unique perspective on societal issues.
“Obviously, it was a sarcastic comment. I have got nothing against cats, I have got nothing against dogs. I have got one dog at home and I love him,” JD Vance explained. He further added, “People are focusing so much on the sarcasm and not on the substance of what I actually said.”
The controversy stems from a 2021 interview JD Vance gave while running for the Senate, where he questioned why some leading politicians did not have children, specifically targeting Vice President Kamala Harris. In the Fox News interview, JD Vance claimed that those without offspring, particularly “childless cat ladies,” lacked a “direct stake” in the country. The resurfaced clip has prompted backlash and accusations of sexism, despite Harris having two stepchildren with her husband, Doug Emhoff.
In the interview on The Megyn Kelly Show, JD Vance clarified that his criticism was aimed at the Democratic Party’s shift away from family-oriented values. “This is about criticising the Democratic Party for becoming anti-family and anti-children,” JD Vance said. He asserted that his comments targeted the Democratic Party and corporate oligarchs, whom he accused of being out of touch with family values. “What I was basically saying is that we were effectively run in this country – via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs – by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives,” JD Vance stated.
The backlash also saw Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston, who has been open about her fertility struggles, criticizing JD Vance’s remarks. “I truly can’t believe that this is coming from a potential VP of the United States,” she said earlier this week. Aniston expressed her dismay on social media, adding, “Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day. I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too.”
Despite the controversy, JD Vance maintained that his comments were taken out of context and reiterated his stance on the importance of family values in political leadership.
