Japan Airlines (JAL), one of the country’s leading carriers, experienced significant disruptions after a cyber attack targeted its systems, leading to delays for both domestic and international flights. The airline confirmed that the incident, which occurred early on Thursday, involved malfunctions in systems responsible for external communication.
The issue began shortly before 7:30 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT, Wednesday), when JAL detected “malfunctions in systems communicating with external systems.” In an effort to mitigate the disruption, the Tokyo-based airline temporarily isolated a router identified as the cause of the problem shortly before 9 a.m. However, the impact on operations was immediate, with delays reported at several Japanese airports.
JAL has since been working to restore its systems and assess the status of the recovery process. The airline assured customers that it had identified the scope of the disruption and was taking necessary steps to resolve the issue. Despite these efforts, ticket sales for all services scheduled on Thursday were suspended as the airline focused on stabilizing its operations.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that more than a dozen flights were delayed across Japan due to the incident. However, there were no widespread cancellations, and JAL is expected to resume normal operations once the system recovery is complete. Passengers traveling with JAL on Thursday faced delays and inconveniences, prompting the airline to issue an apology and updates on the progress of system repairs.
Meanwhile, All Nippon Airways (ANA), JAL’s primary competitor, stated that it had not been affected by any cyber incidents. ANA’s operations continued as scheduled, providing a stark contrast to JAL’s disrupted services.
This cyber attack on JAL highlights the growing risks faced by airlines and other critical industries from technological vulnerabilities. The aviation sector, in particular, has become increasingly reliant on interconnected systems, making it a target for cyber threats. The incident follows a recent technical glitch at American Airlines on Christmas Eve, where a hardware issue forced the temporary grounding of all flights. Such disruptions underscore the need for robust cybersecurity measures to ensure the safety and reliability of operations.
As of now, JAL has not disclosed the origin or nature of the cyber attack, but the airline is expected to release more details after completing its investigation. Travelers are advised to stay updated through JAL’s official channels for further announcements regarding flight schedules and system restoration.
