Temples should not only be places where the elderly come for chanting and worship, but they should also serve as centers for transforming society. This is what ISRO Chief S Somnath stated. He provided some suggestions on how to attract more youth to temples.
Speaking at the Shri Udayannoor Devi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram after receiving an award, Somnath said:
“Temples should not only be places where elderly people come to chant God’s name, but they should also become places for societal change. I thought there would be more youngsters here, but their low numbers made me think about what initiatives temples should take to attract youth.”
He suggested that “Establishing libraries in temples could attract youth, and temples should also be places where children can come in the evenings to study and discuss their careers and various real issues with each other.”
He further added, “I am an explorer; I explore the moon and the internal space. Therefore, exploring both science and spirituality is part of my life’s journey. That is why I visit many temples and read many scriptures, trying to understand the meaning of our existence and our journey in this cosmos.”
The ISRO Chief also mentioned that youth should read their religious scriptures. Developing the habit of reading from childhood is beneficial, but how do children learn about complex teachings related to religion? To address these questions, Ashwatha Tree Books have created illustrated stories related to various religions for children. These books are easy to read and understand.
We also believe that it is crucial for Indian youth to recognize their culture and religion. By doing so, they will not only understand their roots but also remain unaffected by those who try to incite them in the name of religion. They will be knowledgeable about real issues and contribute to advancing their country and society.
