Israeli military operations escalated in Gaza on Sunday as forces pushed deeper into northern and southern regions, resulting in fatalities and widespread destruction of homes, according to local residents.
In northern Gaza’s Shejaia neighborhood and southern Rafah, Israeli tanks fired shells at residential areas, leading to the deaths of at least six Palestinians and leaving numerous families trapped inside their homes, witnesses reported.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his government’s commitment to achieving objectives that include eliminating Hamas, ensuring Israeli security, and repatriating residents displaced by the conflict. The offensive coincided with continued violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where one person was killed and several injured in an Israeli airstrike near Tulkarm.
Tensions have persisted despite efforts by Arab mediators, supported by the United States, to broker a ceasefire. Hamas demands a comprehensive end to hostilities and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, while Israel insists on intermittent truces until Hamas’s military capabilities are neutralized.
The conflict, which began with Hamas incursions into southern Israel in October, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. According to Israeli sources, around 1,200 people have died, including civilians and military personnel, while Gaza’s health ministry reports nearly 38,000 fatalities, primarily civilians. The densely populated enclave has suffered extensive damage from Israeli airstrikes and ground operations.
In response to Hamas’s continued resistance, Israeli forces have intensified their efforts, targeting what they claim are Hamas military installations embedded within civilian structures. Hamas and its allied groups have reported ongoing clashes with Israeli forces, including the use of anti-tank rockets and mortar bombs.
The situation remains fluid as international efforts to broker peace falter, leaving civilians in Gaza and southern Israel in a precarious state. The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have expressed grave concerns over the escalating humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in the region.
The conflict underscores the entrenched animosity between Israel and Hamas, with civilian populations bearing the brunt of the violence. Efforts to halt the bloodshed and initiate a meaningful dialogue continue amidst the persistent hostilities and humanitarian challenges.
