In the midst of escalating tensions, Israel launched retaliatory strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon following a barrage of rockets fired from Lebanese territory. The exchange of fire comes amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, with violence continuing to claim lives and devastate communities.
Reports indicate that approximately 35 rockets were launched from Lebanon towards Israel’s city of Safed during the Passover Seder meal on Monday. Hezbollah later claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it had fired “dozens” of Katyusha rockets in response to Israeli raids on villages in southern Lebanon.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, targeting locations where Hezbollah operatives were believed to be present. Additionally, Israeli strikes in the southern Gaza city of Rafah resulted in numerous casualties, including children, according to health officials.
The recent escalation in violence coincides with the United States’ consideration of additional military aid to Israel, its longstanding ally. However, amid mounting civilian casualties and humanitarian concerns, the US is reportedly weighing the blocking of military aid to certain Israeli army units over alleged human rights abuses in the occupied West Bank.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed concerns regarding potential double standards in US policy towards human rights violations, emphasizing the application of consistent standards across all countries.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has drawn international scrutiny, with the US State Department highlighting the significant negative impact on human rights in the region. Efforts to negotiate a resolution, including discussions mediated by Egypt and Qatar, continue amidst shifting demands and ongoing hostilities.
Domestically, tensions spilled over into clashes at New York University, where police intervened to clear out a protest zone established by pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The situation remains tense, with both sides bracing for further escalation in the conflict.
