Israel commemorated the first anniversary of its war with Hamas, a conflict that began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on the Jewish state. The attack involved thousands of rockets fired into Israel, followed by air, sea, and land breaches along the Gaza border. The violence led to widespread devastation, with Hamas militants killing around 1,200 people, injuring hundreds more, and taking over 250 hostages. One of the most brutal incidents occurred at a music festival, where many were slaughtered.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swiftly declared war on Hamas. Since then, the Israeli military’s operations in Gaza have intensified, claiming the lives of nearly 42,000 people. The war has expanded beyond Gaza, as Israel also combats Iran-backed militias, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, and forces in Iraq and Syria.
The anniversary comes amidst heightened tensions. Hezbollah launched rockets late on Sunday, striking Israel’s northern cities, including Haifa, causing injuries and significant damage. Israeli airstrikes retaliated, targeting Hezbollah’s positions in southern Lebanon and key facilities in Beirut, marking the most intense bombardment in the Lebanese capital since the conflict began. The strikes also extended into the Beqaa Valley, as Israeli fighter jets attacked Hezbollah intelligence headquarters and weapons storage.
In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple sites, including a school and a mosque-turned-shelter. One of the most notable incidents occurred at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which the Israeli military claimed housed a Hamas command center. These strikes left 26 dead and 93 injured, adding to the mounting toll in Gaza.
International protests erupted on the eve of the anniversary, with demonstrators in cities worldwide, including Jakarta, Istanbul, Rabat, and major European capitals, showing solidarity with Palestinians. Despite these calls for a ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes continued against Hamas and Hezbollah positions, further fueling fears of a broader regional war. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant warned of heightened tensions with Iran, following Tehran’s launch of nearly 200 ballistic missiles targeting Israel.
The conflict in Lebanon has also escalated dramatically, with over 2,000 casualties reported in recent weeks. French President Emmanuel Macron’s call to halt arms shipments to Israel sparked outrage from Netanyahu, who condemned the proposal, asserting Israel’s right to defend itself against multiple fronts backed by Iran.
As the situation intensifies, the risk of miscalculation looms large, with the conflict showing no signs of abating.
