The Israeli military has initiated a widespread attack on the Gaza Strip, employing air, land, and sea operations that have resulted in the deaths of at least 55 people and left many more wounded. The assault has particularly targeted areas in central Gaza, including Deir el-Balah and the Nuseirat refugee camp, as well as parts of Gaza City and Rafah in the south.
Reports from the Ministry of Health in Gaza indicate a significant influx of casualties, with a large number of children and women among the dead and injured. Medical facilities, already strained by the ongoing conflict, are struggling to cope with the influx of patients, facing shortages of essential supplies such as medicine and food.
The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, one of the few functioning medical facilities in the area, has been overwhelmed by the casualties. A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed that at least 55 people have been killed and dozens more wounded in the attacks on Deir el-Balah alone. Despite the efforts of medical teams, many injured individuals remain untreated, with bodies still lying in the streets due to the intensity of the bombardment.
Amidst the chaos and destruction, communication lines have been disrupted, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary, reporting from inside the besieged hospital, described scenes of terror and desperation, with explosions occurring continuously and ambulances struggling to reach the wounded.
In response to the escalating violence, the Israeli military stated that it was targeting “terrorist infrastructure” in the Nuseirat area and claimed to have rescued four captives during the operation. However, the Gaza Government Media Office condemned the attack as “unprecedentedly brutal,” with reports of civilian casualties mounting across the region.
The assault comes just days after an Israeli strike on a United Nations-run school in the Nuseirat refugee camp, where scores of displaced Palestinians were taking shelter. The attack, which killed approximately 40 people, drew condemnation from international organizations, with the UNRWA demanding accountability for the targeting of civilian structures. Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza, accused Israel of providing false information about the incident and disputed the military’s claims of targeting “terrorists.”
As the violence escalates and civilian casualties mount, the conflict between Israel and Gaza shows no signs of abating, raising concerns about the humanitarian toll and the prospects for peace in the region.
