A deadly shooting incident shocked the campus of Old Dominion University in the United States when a gunman with previous ties to the extremist group Islamic State opened fire inside a university facility. The suspect, identified by authorities as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, was a former member of the United States National Guard who had earlier been convicted for attempting to assist ISIS. The attack left one person dead and two others injured before the gunman was overpowered by students and later died during the incident. The case is now being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a possible act of terrorism.
Suspect Previously Convicted for Supporting ISIS
Authorities revealed that the suspect had a history of extremist activity. Mohamed Bailor Jalloh pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to provide material support to ISIS and was later sentenced to prison in 2017. After serving several years in custody, he was released in 2024. Investigators are now examining how the suspect managed to carry out the attack after his release and whether he remained connected to extremist ideology during that time.
Officials say the attack took place on Thursday at the university campus located south of Washington. According to investigators, the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire. Law enforcement authorities believe the attacker may have been inspired by past terrorist incidents, including the Fort Hood shooting in Texas that killed thirteen people.
However, investigators said there is currently no evidence that the attacker referenced Iran or any current international conflict during the attack. Authorities are still reviewing the suspect’s digital communications, social media activity and personal contacts to determine whether he acted alone or was influenced by extremist networks.
Students Intervene and Stop the Gunman
The situation could have turned even more tragic if not for the quick response of students present at the scene. According to officials, several students confronted the gunman and managed to subdue him before more people were harmed. Their actions played a crucial role in preventing further casualties.
Kash Patel praised the courage shown by the students who intervened during the incident. In a message posted on social media, Patel said the brave actions of students saved lives while law enforcement officers rushed to the campus.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect died during the incident but clarified that he was not shot by police officers. Investigators said members of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps present in the room helped restrain the attacker. Officials have not yet provided complete details about how the suspect died but confirmed that students were instrumental in stopping the attack.
ROTC Members Among Victims
All three victims of the shooting were members of the ROTC program, which trains university students to become officers in the United States military. One of the victims died during the attack, while two others were injured and transported to hospital for treatment.
Officials identified the person who died as Brandon Shah, a lieutenant colonel associated with the ROTC program. According to public officials, Shah was widely respected for mentoring young students and helping prepare them for military careers.
Abigail Spanberger expressed condolences following the tragedy and praised Shah for his service to the country. She noted that he had dedicated his career to guiding young people who aspired to serve in the armed forces.
University officials confirmed that police and emergency responders arrived quickly after reports of gunfire. The campus was secured and students were moved to safe areas while medical teams treated the injured.
Renewed Debate Over Gun Violence in America
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing problem of gun violence in the United States. School and university shootings have become a serious concern in recent decades, with many incidents causing widespread fear and debate over firearm laws.
The United States has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in the world. Experts say that the large number of firearms in circulation increases the risk of violent incidents. Critics argue that easier access to weapons and relatively relaxed gun laws contribute to the frequency of such attacks.
Security analysts also warn that extremist ideology continues to pose a threat, particularly when individuals with past convictions return to society. The case of Jalloh has raised questions about monitoring individuals with extremist backgrounds after they complete their prison sentences.
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Officials are reviewing the suspect’s background, communications and possible connections to extremist groups. Meanwhile, Old Dominion University has announced additional security measures and support services for students affected by the tragedy.
