In a surprising move, Indian origin Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said he will step down as leader of the country.
During a press conference held at government building in Dublin, in an emotional speech, the Irish PM spoke in length about his decision over quitting immediately as head of Fine Gael Party and from the Prime Minister’s position.However, he said, will continue with the Prime Minister’s Chair responsibility till a new successor to the chair will be appointed.
He cited a personal and political reasons behind his decision for stepping down. In his speech, the 45-year-old Varadkar added that the country’s coalition government would stand a better chance of reelection under another leader.
“But after careful consideration, and some soul searching, I believe that a new Taoiseach (prime minister) and a new leader will be better placed than me to achieve (the coalition government’s re-election),” Varadkar added.
Significantly, Leo Varadkar have successfully mange for twice to serve as prime minister of Ireland — between 2017 and 2020, and again since December 2022.Also the country’s youngest-ever leader when first elected, Varadkar was also Ireland’s first biracial taoiseach with Indian origin link. Varadkar, mother is Irish and father is Indian. He was also Ireland’s first openly gay prime minister.
“I’m proud that we have made the country a more equal and more modern place,” he said in a resignation statement in Dublin.
