In a recent development, the Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has firmly rejected the accusations made by the United States regarding Iran’s alleged involvement in supporting regional militias groups in a letter to Security Council. These allegations were addressed in a letter sent by the US Ambassador to the UN and have sparked a diplomatic dispute. The US envoy’s letter directly blamed Iran for supporting various militias groups and their actions in the Middle East.
In response, Ambassador Iravani pointed to previous letters he had submitted to the UN on December 4, 2023, and January 2, 2024, reiterating Iran’s stance, as reported by state news agency, IRNA. These letters emphasized that resistance forces, operating in countries such as Iraq and Syria, function independently and are not under Iran’s direct or indirect control. He stressed that Iran should not be held accountable for their actions.
In his formal response to the President of the Security Council, Ambassador Iravani stated, “The Islamic Republic of Iran categorically rejects these unfounded allegations. There is no group affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s armed forces, whether in Iraq, Syria, or elsewhere, that operates directly or indirectly under our control or acts on our behalf. Therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran is not responsible for the actions of any individual or group within the region.”
Furthermore, Ambassador Iravani challenged the legality of US actions in Syria and Iraq under international law and the UN Charter, particularly Article 2(4) of the Charter. He argued that the US notification submitted to the Security Council, attempting to justify these actions under Article 51 of the UN Charter, lacks a legal foundation.
