Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag is confident that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will remain competitive in the IPL 2024 playoffs despite the absence of their prolific opener, Phil Salt. Virender Sehwag believes that KKR has the depth to fill the void left by Phil Salt in their crucial Qualifier 1 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 21.
Phil Salt has been instrumental in KKR’s batting lineup, delivering explosive performances alongside Sunil Narine at the top of the order. The 27-year-old has been one of the standout performers this season, scoring 435 runs in 13 matches. His dynamic partnership with Sunil Narine has often set the tone for KKR’s aggressive approach.
Phil Salt’s departure to join the England national team camp for their upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, starting on May 22, has left KKR needing to reconfigure their lineup. This development comes after KKR’s final group match against Rajasthan Royals was washed out on May 19, setting the stage for their playoff clash against SRH.
Virender Sehwag, speaking to ESPNCricinfo, emphasized the importance of other players stepping up in Phil Salt’s absence.
“It’s not like one player’s absence will diminish the value of your team. Another player simply needs to perform well. While Phil Salt’s runs and strike rate will be missed, it’s an opportunity for someone else to shine,” Virender Sehwag remarked.
He added, “It’s about looking at it positively. You have other players for moments like these, to step up when needed. All it takes is one match.”
KKR has several options to replace Phil Salt, including Rahmanullah Gurbaz and KS Bharat, both capable wicketkeeper-batters. The team’s decision on who will fill Phil Salt’s shoes will be closely watched in the upcoming match against SRH.
Virender Sehwag’s comments reflect his belief in KKR’s resilience and depth, suggesting that the team can maintain its strong performance even without one of its key players.
