India’s women’s cricket team delivered a commanding performance to defeat the West Indies by a massive 211 runs in the first One Day International (ODI) held at Vadodara on Sunday. The victory not only gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series but also highlighted their all-round superiority over a depleted West Indies side.
After being invited to bat first by West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, India got off to a solid start, thanks to the return of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and the inclusion of debutant Pratika Rawal. Opening with the in-form Smriti Mandhana, Pratika impressed on debut with a composed 40 off 69 balls, contributing to a 110-run partnership with Smriti before falling to the West Indies bowlers.
Smriti Mandhana was in scintillating form, taking on the opposition with her trademark attacking style. She scored an outstanding 91 off 102 balls, setting the tone for India’s batting dominance. Harleen Deol played a crucial supporting role, contributing a half-century with a composed 50 runs.
Harmanpreet Kaur added fireworks to the innings with a quick 34 off 23 balls before being run out, while wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues added finishing touches to the innings. Richa smashed 34 off 23 balls, and Jemimah hammered 31 off just 19 deliveries, propelling India to an imposing total of 314 runs.
In response, the West Indies batting lineup crumbled under the pressure of India’s disciplined bowling attack. Renuka Singh was the star of the show, claiming her maiden ODI five-wicket haul with exceptional figures of 5 for 29. Her accurate and incisive bowling dismantled the West Indies top order, leaving them with no chance of a recovery.
Priya Mishra and Deepti Sharma also contributed to the collapse, taking two and one wickets respectively, as the visitors were bowled out for a paltry total. The West Indies’ inability to build partnerships and counter India’s relentless bowling was evident throughout their innings.
Renuka Singh’s stellar performance earned her the Player of the Match award. India’s emphatic victory puts them in a commanding position in the series, with momentum firmly on their side as they prepare for the second ODI, scheduled to be played on December 24. This comprehensive win not only showcased India’s batting depth but also reaffirmed their dominance in women’s cricket.
