The brutal terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 shook the entire nation, claiming 26 innocent lives and leaving families devastated. In the face of this tragedy, India responded with firm and decisive measures to hold Pakistan accountable and protect national security. Over the past month, India has taken significant steps ranging from diplomatic to military actions, demonstrating its resolve against cross-border terrorism and sending a strong message to Pakistan.

Diplomatic and Economic Measures to Pressure Pakistan

Following the attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty on April 23, a critical water-sharing pact between the two countries since 1960. This suspension was a clear strategic move aimed at leveraging India’s control over water resources to pressure Pakistan into halting its support for terrorism. On the same day, India expelled Pakistani military advisers based in New Delhi and reduced the staff at its high commission in Islamabad from 55 to 30, scaling down diplomatic ties considerably. Additionally, India revoked all existing visas for Pakistani nationals and imposed strict travel bans under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. These steps were designed to restrict movement and communications, emphasizing India’s zero-tolerance stance toward terror sponsorship.

Military Operations and Border Security Tightening

In the military domain, India launched Operation Sindoor, a precise airstrike targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir responsible for the Pahalgam attack. This operation aimed to dismantle terror infrastructure while minimizing civilian casualties, marking a strong escalation in India’s counterterrorism strategy. Furthermore, on May 1, India closed the Attari–Wagah border crossing, cutting a vital trade and travel route to disrupt bilateral engagements and demonstrate its firm position against Pakistan. Following these moves, Pakistan attempted to retaliate by targeting Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. India responded strongly to these provocations, and after intense exchanges, both countries agreed to halt military actions following talks between their respective directors general of military operations on May 10.

These concerted diplomatic, economic, and military measures collectively underscore India’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and sending a clear message that acts of terrorism will be met with strong and coordinated responses.
