India’s preparations for the second Test against Australia in Adelaide, set to begin on December 6, have hit a snag as Shubman Gill’s availability remains uncertain due to a fractured left thumb. The talented right-hander sustained the injury during an intra-squad match before the series opener in Perth, which he also missed. Reports suggest that Shubman Gill is certain to skip the pink-ball practice game in Canberra this weekend and is doubtful for the day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval.
According to The Times of India, medical specialists have advised Shubman Gill to rest for 10 to 14 days. Even after recovery, he will require match practice before returning to the Test setup. A source close to the team stated, “Shubman Gill was advised rest after suffering the injury. He won’t play the practice match this weekend and remains doubtful for the Adelaide Test. Even if his injury heals, quality practice sessions will be necessary before he is considered for selection.”
Former India selector Jatin Paranjape warned that such injuries could sideline players for a prolonged period. “Finger injuries, especially to the thumb, typically take two to four weeks to heal. Shubman Gill could potentially miss two or three Tests,” Paranjape noted.
Shubman Gill, a pivotal member of India’s batting lineup, made his Test debut during India’s memorable Australia tour four years ago. His contributions at the top of the order, including a crucial role in India’s historic victory at the Gabba, cemented his place in the team. Recently, he transitioned to the No.3 position, a move that followed the selectors’ decision to look beyond Cheteshwar Pujara. Shubman Gill requested then-head coach Rahul Dravid for the opportunity, a decision that has paid dividends. At No.3, the 24-year-old has amassed 924 runs in 25 innings at an average of 42.07, outperforming his career average of 36.73, with three centuries to his name.
Shubman Gill’s injury, coupled with regular captain Rohit Sharma’s absence from the first Test, forced India to reshuffle their top order. KL Rahul partnered with Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers, a move that yielded remarkable results, including a record double-century stand in the second innings. With Sharma back for the Adelaide Test, he is likely to resume opening with Jaiswal. Rahul could then drop to No.3, leaving no room for Devdutt Padikkal, who was brought into the squad as a late addition for the series opener.
India’s lineup for the crucial day-night Test hangs in the balance as the team management awaits updates on Shubman Gill’s fitness.
