India suffered a rare home Test defeat against New Zealand, losing the first match of the three-Test series by eight wickets at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. The match exposed several issues in the Indian lineup, most notably the batting collapse in the first innings, where the hosts were bundled out for their lowest home Test total of 46. Despite a resilient second-innings performance led by Sarfaraz Khan’s brilliant 150 and crucial contributions from Rishabh Pant (99), Virat Kohli (70), and Rohit Sharma (52), India’s total of 462 was not enough to prevent New Zealand’s commanding victory.
This defeat marked the first time in over 11 years that India faced the possibility of losing a home Test series, and the situation has been worsened by concerns over the fitness and workload of key players, especially pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Jasprit Bumrah, who has been India’s most effective bowler this season, has bowled 76 overs in the ongoing home season alone. His performances have been stellar, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the recent series against Bangladesh, with 11 wickets at an average of 12.81. Across the entire season, he has taken 14 wickets at an average of 15.07.
Since his return to the Test side in December 2023, Jasprit Bumrah has bowled 228.2 overs in nine matches, claiming 45 wickets at an average of 15.26. His immense workload, combined with his history of injuries, has raised concerns about his fitness moving forward, especially with the critical five-match Test series against Australia looming. Despite the heavy workload, Jasprit Bumrah was India’s standout bowler in the second innings against New Zealand, picking up both wickets and keeping hopes of an unlikely victory alive.
However, India now faces a dilemma. The team management is considering giving Jasprit Bumrah a rest to manage his workload, but with the threat of losing the series, they may find it difficult to bench their star pacer.
Compounding the issue is the poor form of Mohammad Siraj. Siraj has struggled this season, managing just six wickets in three matches at an average of 39.66. His underperformance has left India overly reliant on Jasprit Bumrah. Youngster Akash Deep, who impressed during the Bangladesh series, is expected to return to the playing XI for the second Test, but questions remain about Siraj’s ability to lead the pace attack in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence.
India’s team management now faces a difficult task in selecting the best playing combination for the second Test in Pune while balancing player fitness with the need for a crucial win.
