  • Indian traders halt all trade ties with Pakistan after attack.

In the aftermath of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, Indian traders have taken a strong stand by halting all trade relations with Pakistan. This decision, announced by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), follows the brutal killings of innocent tourists. Trade leaders, gathered in Bhubaneswar for a CAIT meeting, expressed their outrage over the attack and resolved to end all imports and exports with Pakistan.

Protest Against Pahalgam Attack and Deteriorating Trade Relations

The traders’ body, CAIT, stated that in response to the terror attack and as a protest against the senseless violence, Indian businesses will immediately cease any transactions with Pakistan. Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT, emphasized the collective decision to cut off all forms of trade, highlighting the importance of national unity and security. The trade volume between India and Pakistan has already seen a significant decline after the 2019 Pulwama attack. Prior to this, trade between the two nations peaked at nearly $3 billion in 2018. However, by 2024, the figure had dwindled to about $1.2 billion, with India exporting around $500 million worth of goods to Pakistan, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and auto parts, and importing merely $0.42 million in goods. The recent move to halt all trade reflects the growing tension between the two countries and is seen as a form of economic retaliation for the attack.

Economic Sacrifices for National Security

CAIT has also made it clear that the Indian business community is prepared to bear any economic consequences in the interest of upholding the nation’s security and integrity. The decision to end all trade ties with Pakistan is a significant step, with traders indicating they are willing to accept potential losses to safeguard India’s unity. Meanwhile, India’s retaliatory measures against Pakistan have extended beyond trade restrictions. The government recently banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, including major news platforms like Dawn News and Geo News, for spreading content deemed harmful to national security. In addition to this, India has taken further steps, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty, closing the Attari check post, and reducing the number of staff in the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. These actions reflect India’s growing dissatisfaction with Pakistan and its response to the ongoing security concerns.

This decisive action from the Indian traders and the government underscores the nation’s resolve to take strong measures in response to terror-related threats and to ensure the safety and sovereignty of the country.
