Indian sailor Vishnu Saravanan clinched the gold medal in the men’s one-person dinghy (ILCA7) category at the Europa Cup 2024 sailing meet held in Mallorca, Spain on Sunday. The event, organized by the Reial Club Nautic Port de Pollenca, witnessed Saravanan’s stellar performance amidst tough competition.
Saravanan’s victory was hard-earned, as he emerged triumphant in a field of 91 boats, accumulating 17 net points throughout the races. While the Netherlands’ Willem Wiersema also amassed the same points, Saravanan secured the top spot in the category based on technicality, showcasing his prowess on the water.
The bronze medal was claimed by Australia’s Lawson McAullay, who demonstrated impressive skill with 22 net points in the fiercely contested event.
The ILCA7 category, part of the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) sailing class, features small, lightweight boats with a single mast. Saravanan, displaying exceptional talent and determination, won two of his seven races at the meet, solidifying his position as a force to be reckoned with in the sailing world.
The Europa Cup 2024 witnessed historic participation, with 334 sailors competing under challenging conditions characterized by fluctuating wind speeds ranging from 15 to over 30 knots throughout the three-day competition.
Saravanan’s recent victory adds to his illustrious sailing career. In January, he made history by becoming the first Indian sailor to secure a sailing quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This significant achievement was realized at the ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship 2024 held in Australia earlier this year.
As the anticipation builds for the Paris Olympics, Saravanan’s participation depends on the selection by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of India. Should he compete, he would join a select group of Indian sailors to represent the nation in multiple Olympic Games, following in the footsteps of Farokh Tarapore, who competed in the Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, and Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics.
