Suhas Subramanyam, an Indian-American, is set to bolster the ranks of the “Samosa Caucus” in the US Congress following his victory in the Virginia Democratic primaries. The caucus comprises Indian-American legislators in Congress.
Suhas Subramanyam emerged victorious in a competitive intra-party election held on Tuesday to secure the Democratic nomination for the House of Representatives from a district encompassing Washington suburbs. The seat, currently held by Democrats, was previously flipped by Jennifer Wexton in 2018.
The 37-year-old, whose family hails from Bengaluru, brings a diverse background as a lawyer and former technology advisor to Barack Obama. His career spans cybersecurity and government modernization initiatives. Subramanyam also serves as a volunteer medic and firefighter.
In a parallel development, Indian-American Rajesh Mohan clinched the Republican nomination for a House seat in New Jersey. Rajesh Mohan, a cardiologist trained at Delhi University, faces a challenging path in a heavily Democratic constituency currently represented by Andrew Kim.
Meanwhile, in Oregon, Susheela Jayapal, sister of Representative Pramila Jayapal, faced defeat in the Democratic primary for a congressional seat. Pramila Jayapal leads the Congressional Progressive Caucus in neighboring Washington State.
The outcomes reflect a growing influence of Indian-Americans in US politics, particularly within the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
