An Indian-origin lawyer, Jasvinder Singh Gill, has been suspended from practising as a solicitor for two years following a disciplinary tribunal’s findings of sexual misconduct involving junior female colleagues at a UK law firm.
The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal reached its decision after the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) pursued a case against Jasvinder Singh Gill, citing his inappropriate behavior between 2015 and 2020. The tribunal concluded that Jasvinder Singh Gill, as a senior partner in his forties, abused his position of authority to initiate and pursue consensual sexual relationships with several junior female employees.
“The Respondent had, on repeated occasions, used his position of influence and authority in the workplace to create situations in which office relationships, sexual in intent, were initiated and pursued by him,” stated the tribunal’s judgment document.
Acknowledging Jasvinder Singh Gill’s professional stature as an “experienced and well-regarded solicitor who had built a thriving business,” the tribunal underscored that his conduct towards junior staff was “wrong and inappropriate.” It emphasized the necessity of a two-year suspension as a suitable sanction to uphold the legal profession’s reputation and safeguard against such misconduct.
Under the tribunal’s order, Jasvinder Singh Gill’s suspension began on May 21, and he is liable to cover the application costs amounting to GBP 85,501.10. There exists a provision for Jasvinder Singh Gill to seek a review of these restrictions following the conclusion of his suspension period.
The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding workplace conduct and the power dynamics within professional settings, emphasizing the legal community’s commitment to maintaining ethical standards and addressing misconduct effectively.
