In a swift and decisive response, Indian Navy’s Mission Deployed platforms responded swiftly to a maritime incident in Arabian Sea involving a hijacking attempt onboard Liberia Flagged bulk carrier. The incident unfolded on the evening of January 4, 2024, when the vessel transmitted a distress message via the UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) portal, indicating an unauthorized boarding by approximately five to six unknown armed individuals.
With utmost urgency, the Indian Navy launched a Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) and diverted the INS Chennai, which was already deployed for Maritime Security Operations, to assist the threatened vessel. In the early hours of January 5, 2024, the MPA conducted a flyover of the vessel, establishing contact and verifying the safety of the crew on board.
Continuing to closely monitor the situation, the Indian Navy’s naval aircraft remains vigilant in tracking the movements of the vessel. The INS Chennai is steadily closing in on the target to provide necessary assistance.
This operation is being conducted in coordination with other relevant agencies and Maritime Security Forces in the area. The Indian Navy Spokesperson in a statement said, “The Indian Navy remains committed to ensuring safety of merchant shipping in the region along with international partners and friendly foreign countries.”
