The Indian Navy successfully evacuated an injured Bulgarian sailor from the Malta-flagged vessel MV Ruen, which had fallen victim to piracy off the coast of Somalia.
The sailor, part of the 18-member crew aboard the cargo ship, suffered injuries in an exchange of fire with the pirates. Acting promptly, the Indian Navy’s frontline ship INS Kochi undertook the mission to ensure the medical well-being of the injured individual.
“The Indian Navy rendered assistance in the evacuation of an injured crew member from the hijacked vessel MV Ruen in the early hours of Monday,” reported PTI, quoting an official. Despite being stable, the injured crew member required urgent medical attention beyond the ship’s capabilities, prompting a transfer ashore at Oman.
Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal affirmed the navy’s unwavering commitment to aiding mariners at sea. Responding to a distress call, earlier, the navy deployed an aircraft and a warship to assist the hijacked Malta-flagged ship in the Arabian Sea.
“The aircraft overflew the hijacked vessel early December 15, continuously monitoring its movement towards the coast of Somalia,” stated the Navy. While, the Naval warship intercepted MV Ruen on the morning of December 16, showcasing the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts to combat piracy and ensure the safety of maritime activities in the region.
