The death of Jaspal Singh, a 57-year-old Indian national awaiting deportation from the United States due to his illegal entry, has prompted notifications to the Indian Consulate in New York and his next of kin, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.
Jaspal Singh passed away at a hospital in Atlanta on April 15, ICE confirmed. An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death.
Jaspal Singh, originally from India, initially entered the US legally on October 25, 1992. However, on January 21, 1998, an immigration judge ordered his removal from the country. Subsequently, Singh voluntarily returned to India at an unspecified date.
In a turn of events, Jaspal Singh was arrested by US Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol officers on June 29, 2023, while attempting to illegally reenter the United States at the US-Mexico border.
Following his arrest, Jaspal Singh was transferred to Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Atlanta, where he was detained at a federal processing center while undergoing immigration proceedings.
Upon Jaspal Singh’s death at the hospital, standard protocol required ERO to notify Congress, relevant non-governmental organizations, stakeholders, and the media. A news release containing pertinent details was also posted on ERO’s public website within two business days, in accordance with procedures for deaths occurring at detention centers.
