Amid escalating violence in Bangladesh, Indian Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed deep concern over the ongoing situation, highlighting the impact of the unrest on India-Bangladesh relations. Indian Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, speaking to ANI, lamented the deterioration of what was once celebrated as a democratic revolution into a state of anarchy and targeted violence, particularly against minority communities.
Indian Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s remarks come in response to reports of widespread vandalism in Bangladesh, including attacks on symbols of India-Bangladesh friendship. “It is extremely tragic that what was hailed as a democratic, popular revolution has degenerated into anarchy, with violence targeting minorities and the Hindu community,” Tharoor said. He noted the destruction of significant symbols, including the statue commemorating the surrender of Pakistani forces to Indian soldiers, the Indian Cultural Centre, and the ISKCON temple. Tharoor criticized these acts as deeply negative signs, impacting how Indians perceive the situation in Bangladesh.
The violence in Bangladesh erupted following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5, amid widespread protests demanding reforms to the quota system for government jobs. The protests have escalated, leading to clashes between the Bangladeshi Army and members of the minority Hindu community, who have been protesting the disappearance of their family members.
In a bid to address the concerns of the minority communities, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, visited the Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka. Yunus assured the minorities of their safety and called for patience and unity. He emphasized the need for equitable rights for all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations, and stressed the importance of fixing institutional arrangements to prevent such conflicts.
A subsequent meeting at the temple between Muslim and Hindu community representatives aimed to foster dialogue and work towards strengthening communal harmony amidst the turmoil.
