Indian archers displayed their prowess on the international stage as the men’s compound team clinched gold at the Asia Cup 2024 Stage-1 World Ranking Tournament in Baghdad, Iraq on Saturday.
Comprising Prathamesh Jawkar, Priyansh, and Kushal Dalal, the Indian trio secured victory by defeating the Iranian team with a score of 232-229 in a thrilling gold medal match, marking a triumphant start to the tournament.
India, seeded at the top, continued their dominant performance by defeating Iraq in the semi-finals following a quarter-final bye. Bangladesh claimed the bronze medal by defeating the hosts.
The success continued for India as Jawkar and Dalal advanced to the men’s compound individual final, setting the stage for an all-Indian showdown on Sunday.
However, the women’s compound team, featuring Aditi Swami, Priya Gurjar, and Parneet Kaur, settled for silver after a closely contested final against Iran, finishing with a score of 223-229.
In the individual women’s compound event, Aditi Swami secured the bronze medal, showcasing her prowess by defeating teammate Priya Gurjar in the third-place playoff match.
The action-packed day concluded with Jawkar and Swami combining forces to secure another gold for India in the mixed team compound event, outclassing Iran with a score of 159-157.
As the tournament heads towards its climax on Sunday, Indian archers aim to sweep all gold medals in recurve archery. Deepika Kumari, making a comeback, is set to compete against teammate Simranjeet Kaur in an all-Indian women’s recurve final, while Olympian Tarundeep Rai and Dhiraj Bommadevara vie for the men’s title.
Furthermore, India is poised to compete in all three recurve archery team finals – women’s, men’s, and mixed team – showcasing the country’s depth of talent and determination on the global stage.
