The United States has called upon India to leverage its longstanding relationship with Russia to facilitate peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, emphasized India’s pivotal role and underscored its importance as a partner to the United States.
Miller’s remarks, made during a press briefing, followed recent trade discussions between India and Russia, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow amidst ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Addressing the trade talks and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s criticism of the same, Miller stated, “India has a longstanding relationship with Russia. I think that’s well known.”
“We have encouraged India to utilize its relationship with Russia, along with its unique position, to urge President Vladimir Putin to end his illegal war and work towards a just and lasting peace,” Miller asserted. He reiterated the US stance on respecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty under the United Nations Charter.
India and Russia recently pledged to enhance bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, including the use of national currencies to mitigate Western sanctions. This commitment was reaffirmed during the 22nd Annual Summit in Moscow, marking Modi and Putin’s first meeting since the onset of the Ukraine conflict two years ago.
In their joint statement, India and Russia emphasized the necessity of a peaceful resolution to the “conflict around Ukraine,” acknowledging mediation efforts aligned with international law and UN principles.
The US continues to engage with India, recognizing its significant role in diplomatic efforts regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
