India Rallies to Aid Nepal
Following the series of massive earthquakes, Nepal has been grappling with widespread destruction and urgent humanitarian needs. India, standing steadfast as a close ally and neighbor, has been actively involved in the relief operations from the outset. This fourth installment of aid follows closely on the heels of the third tranche, which arrived in Nepal on November 9, 2023. Over 12 tonnes of crucial supplies, including blankets, sleeping bags, tents, and medical necessities, were airlifted by a special Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130 flight, underlining India’s prompt and effective disaster response.
India’s swift response affirms its commitment to support Nepal
India’s role as a First Responder in regional emergencies is well-documented, dating back to its significant contribution following the 2015 Nepal earthquake. The Indian Government spearheaded Operation Maitri, its largest international disaster relief operation, showcasing a profound commitment to aiding Nepal in its hour of need. The operation was not only a demonstration of immediate relief efforts but also a symbol of deep-seated solidarity.
Further, beyond immediate disaster response, India’s support encompasses extensive long-term recovery and reconstruction initiatives. Notably, the Indian government committed US$ 1 billion towards Nepal’s post-earthquake rebuilding efforts, focusing on critical sectors such as housing, education, health, and cultural heritage restoration. A significant aspect of this aid was the reconstruction of 50,000 houses in the hard-hit districts of Gorkha and Nuwakot, reflecting a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation.
