Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reaffirmed a robust partnership between India and Brazil during their meeting in Brasilia, pledging to triple trade flows, deepen defence ties, and advance cooperation in digital payments, green energy, and health. The discussions, held after the BRICS leaders’ summit in Rio de Janeiro, highlighted the nations’ shared commitment to zero tolerance and zero double standards on terrorism while pushing forward a vision of inclusive, human-centric development.
Trade Expansion and Defence Cooperation
President Lula expressed Brazil’s intention to triple trade with India from the current $12 billion “in the short term,” indicating strong optimism about economic engagement without a rigid timeframe. Prime Minister Modi echoed this optimism by setting a target of $20 billion in bilateral trade over the next five years. Using the analogy of Brazil’s passion for football and India’s love for cricket, PM Modi underscored the ease of achieving these goals when both nations work together.
The leaders highlighted their growing defence cooperation as a “symbol of deep mutual trust,” with PM Modi stating that India and Brazil will continue efforts to connect their defence industries further. President Lula noted that Brazilian planemaker Embraer aims to strengthen its presence in India through strategic partnerships, signalling deeper industrial cooperation in the aviation and defence sectors.
Advancing Digital, Green, and Health Initiatives
Six agreements were signed during the visit, covering areas such as counter-terrorism, renewable energy, intellectual property, digital solutions, agricultural research, and the mutual protection of classified information. PM Modi and Lula discussed enhancing collaboration in artificial intelligence and supercomputing, reflecting a shared commitment to inclusive, technology-driven development. PM Modi highlighted ongoing efforts to implement India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Brazil, offering to share India’s digital public infrastructure expertise.
On the clean energy front, PM Modi stated that environment and green energy are central priorities for both nations, with a new agreement signed to boost cooperation in these sectors. He wished President Lula success for the upcoming COP30 climate conference to be hosted in Brazil, underlining India’s commitment to global green goals.
In the health sector, both leaders agreed to expand cooperation, focusing on Ayurveda, traditional medicine, and broader health initiatives, thereby reinforcing people-centric development strategies. PM Modi also highlighted the historical cooperation in agriculture and animal husbandry, stating that the two nations would now work together on food processing and agricultural research to enhance food security and economic opportunities for farmers.
Global South and Strategic Alignment
Both leaders emphasised the strategic alignment of India and Brazil on global platforms, asserting that their cooperation benefits not only the Global South but also the world at large. PM Modi noted that the nations share a moral obligation to represent the concerns of the Global South in global forums, particularly in a world experiencing growing tensions and uncertainties.
“This India-Brazil partnership is an important pillar of stability and balance. We are unanimous that all disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy,” PM Modi remarked, reiterating a commitment to peaceful global engagement.
In recognition of his efforts to strengthen India-Brazil ties, President Lula awarded Prime Minister Modi with Brazil’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross. This honour reflects PM Modi’s significant contributions to advancing cooperation across key sectors and fostering a partnership based on mutual respect and shared democratic values.
PM Modi’s visit to Brazil was part of his five-nation tour, which included Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and will conclude in Namibia before returning to Delhi. This visit reaffirmed India’s strategic outreach to Latin America, reinforcing India’s global partnerships and its commitment to expanding South-South cooperation in trade, defence, technology, and green growth.
