The star of the night was Sanju Samson, whose unbeaten 97 off 50 balls anchored the chase. His innings ensured India not only secured a semifinal berth in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but also recorded their highest successful chase in T20 World Cup history.

West Indies Set a Massive Target

After India opted to bowl first, West Indies started aggressively. The openers capitalised on field restrictions and built early momentum without losing a wicket in the powerplay. The pitch at Eden Gardens offered true bounce, allowing batters to play freely.

The breakthrough came when Varun Chakaravarthy dismissed captain Shai Hope in the ninth over. Soon after, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a decisive spell, removing Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase in the same over to stall West Indies’ progress.

Hardik Pandya further tightened the screws by dismissing Sherfane Rutherford. However, the Caribbean side finished strongly. Jason Holder and Rovman Powell launched a fierce assault in the death overs, adding 76 runs in just 35 balls.

West Indies concluded their innings at 195/4, setting India a challenging target of 196. Bumrah finished with two wickets and became India’s leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history during the match.

Early Pressure on India

India’s chase did not begin smoothly. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan fell early, putting the team under immediate pressure. With the required rate climbing, India needed a stabilising partnership.

Sanju Samson stepped up. Alongside Suryakumar Yadav, he stitched a crucial 58-run stand. Though Suryakumar was dismissed for 18, Samson continued with calculated aggression.

He reached his maiden T20 World Cup fifty in just 26 balls. His approach blended timing with power, frequently piercing gaps and clearing boundaries when required.

Composure in the Final Overs

As wickets fell around him, Samson maintained clarity and composure. He rotated strike effectively and targeted specific bowlers, preventing pressure from building excessively. His control over tempo distinguished his innings from others.

With the equation narrowing in the final over, Samson struck the winning boundary to seal victory. He remained unbeaten on 97, narrowly missing a century but delivering a match-winning performance.

This chase surpassed India’s previous highest T20 World Cup pursuit of 173 against South Africa in 2014. Overall, it stands as the third-highest successful chase in tournament history.

Semifinal Against England

With this win, India joined South Africa, England, and New Zealand in the semifinals. They will face England cricket team on 5 March at Wankhede Stadium.

India previously lost to England in the 2022 semifinal but defeated them in 2024. The upcoming contest adds another intense chapter to this rivalry.

For West Indies, this defeat marked the end of their campaign and their first T20 World Cup loss at Eden Gardens.

India now stand two victories away from defending their title, buoyed by confidence and momentum generated from this record-breaking chase.
