In a diplomatic stride towards reinforcing the longstanding ties between India and Bangladesh, the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) took place in New Delhi on November 24, 2023. The Indian delegation, led by Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Foreign Secretary, engaged in extensive deliberations with their Bangladeshi counterparts, headed by Masud Bin Momen, Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh.
The FOC, a crucial institutional dialogue mechanism, served as a platform for both sides to review the entire spectrum of the bilateral relationship. Discussions encompassed a myriad of issues, ranging from border and security concerns to trade, commerce, and connectivity. The dialogue also delved into cooperation in vital sectors such as water, power, and energy, underscoring the depth of the relationship.
One notable point of appreciation from the Indian side was Bangladesh’s active participation in the recently concluded Virtual G20 summit and the Voice of Global South Summit 2.0. This acknowledgment reflects the collaborative spirit between the two nations on the global stage.
Comprehensive talks further embraced people-to-people ties and development cooperation initiatives in Bangladesh, emphasizing the holistic approach both nations adopt in nurturing their relationship. The exchange of views extended beyond bilateral matters, encompassing sub-regional, regional, and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
A key outcome of the consultations was the agreement to host the next FOC in Bangladesh, marking a commitment to sustained dialogue and collaboration.
“It was agreed that the next FOC will be hosted in Bangladesh on a mutually convenient date,” the MEA in a statement said.
