India’s national flag, a powerful symbol of the country’s sovereignty and unity, has undergone significant transformations before becoming the emblematic tricolor that flutters proudly today. As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day on August 15, it is a fitting moment to reflect on the journey of the Indian flag, from its early designs to its current form.

The Indian flag, designed by Pingali Venkayya, officially came into use in 1947 after several iterations throughout the country’s struggle for independence. The present flag features three horizontal bands: saffron at the top symbolizing strength and courage, white in the middle representing peace and truth, and green at the bottom denoting growth and auspiciousness. In the center of the white band is the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke wheel symbolizing progress and dynamism.

The journey of the Indian flag began in 1906 with its first design, which was hoisted in Calcutta as part of the Swadeshi movement. This initial flag was composed of three colors with green at the top, yellow in the middle, and red at the bottom, each adorned with symbols such as lotuses, a crescent moon, and the sun.

By 1907, Madam Bikaji Cama presented a revised version at the International Socialist Congress in Germany. This flag, also known as the Berlin Committee flag, featured an orange top band and stars replacing the lotuses. It was a call for international support against British rule.

The Home Rule Movement in 1917 saw another iteration, with a flag designed by Annie Besant and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, featuring nine horizontal stripes and a depiction of the British flag along with stars and a crescent moon.

In 1921, Pingali Venkayya’s design, which included a spinning wheel or Charkha in the center, was presented to Mahatma Gandhi but was not adopted at the time. The flag was later modified to resemble the current version, with the Charkha being replaced by the Ashoka Chakra in 1947.

Venkayya, a freedom fighter and scholar, dedicated his efforts to creating a flag that would unify the diverse communities of India. His design was ultimately adopted as the national flag, symbolizing the unity and aspirations of a newly independent India.

As we observe Independence Day, the Indian flag stands as a testament to the country’s rich history and the relentless spirit of its people.
