Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has taken legal action against high-profile figures Elon Musk and JK Rowling, accusing them of cyberbullying following a gender row that garnered widespread attention during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The lawsuit, filed on Friday, alleges “aggravated cyber-harassment” directed at Imane Khelif, which her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, described as a “misogynist, racist, and sexist campaign.”

The controversy began when American swimmer Riley Gaines posted a picture of Imane Khelif on social media with the caption, “Men don’t belong in women’s sports.” Elon Musk subsequently shared the post, adding, “Absolutely.” JK Rowling also weighed in on the matter, criticizing Imane Khelif’s participation in the Olympic event. Rowling’s post read, “Could any picture sum up our new men’s rights movement better? The smirk of a male who knows he’s protected by a misogynist sporting establishment enjoying the distress of a woman he’s just punched in the head, and whose life’s ambition he’s just shattered.”

These comments came in the wake of a controversy that began earlier when Imane Khelif was disqualified from the women’s World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after reportedly failing a gender eligibility test. Despite this setback, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed her to continue competing in the Olympics, leading to further debate and criticism.
The situation escalated during the Olympics when Italy’s Angela Carini withdrew from her Round of 16 bout against Imane Khelif after just 46 seconds, tearfully stating that she had “never been hit so hard” in her life. This incident fueled the ongoing controversy, with Imane Khelif facing intense backlash from various quarters.
However, IOC President Thomas Bach publicly defended Imane Khelif, asserting that “women must be allowed to take part in women’s competitions.” Despite the adversity, Imane Khelif went on to make history, becoming the first Algerian woman to win a gold medal in boxing at the Olympic Games. She achieved a decisive victory in the gold-medal match, defeating China’s Yang Liu 5-0. Imane Khelif also secured impressive wins against Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng and Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori.
Following her historic victory, Imane Khelif expressed her determination to rise above the controversy, stating that her achievement was a message to the IBA: “Now the whole world knows the story of Imane Khelif.” Her legal action against Elon Musk and Rowling underscores her resolve to stand against what she views as a campaign of cyberbullying and discrimination.
As the lawsuit progresses, it will likely draw further attention to the broader issues of gender identity in sports and the challenges faced by athletes like Imane Khelif who find themselves at the center of such debates. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for how these issues are addressed in the future, both in sports and in the wider society.
