  • Ex-con advocates surrendering illegal firearms amid Kenya's crime surge.
  • King Kafu empowers youth, seeks government support for change.

As Kenya grapples with a surge in violent crime, BBC Africa Eye delves into the efforts of one former criminal who endeavors to persuade individuals to relinquish their illegal firearms, one step at a time.

Offering his candid account under the condition of anonymity, a young man, identified as Samuel, reflects on his past transgressions, including the gravest of offenses – taking a life. Driven by a desire to break free from his criminal past, Samuel seeks the guidance of King Kafu, a reformed convict dedicated to steering individuals away from illicit activities.

In the midst of Kisumu, against the backdrop of Lake Victoria’s tranquil waters, Samuel, visibly apprehensive, discloses his possession of an AK47 and his intent to surrender it to the authorities. His decision is rooted in a deep-seated concern for his family’s welfare and a realization of the consequences of his actions.

With violent robberies on the rise and the influx of illegal firearms through porous borders, Kenya faces a pressing challenge in curbing gun-related crimes. Acting as an intermediary between individuals seeking to relinquish their weapons and law enforcement, King Kafu leverages his own past experiences to advocate for change.

Having himself embarked on a path of crime at a tender age, Kafu’s transformative journey from offender to advocate epitomizes the potential for redemption. Through his role as a presenter on Ghetto Radio, he endeavors to deter young people from falling prey to the allure of crime, emphasizing the detrimental impact on individuals and communities alike.

While the Kenyan government has implemented amnesties aimed at mitigating gun-related crimes, the scale of illegal firearms in circulation remains daunting. Despite the amnesty programs, widespread fears persist among individuals contemplating surrendering their weapons, exacerbated by concerns of potential repercussions and mistrust of law enforcement.

Allegations of police involvement in extrajudicial killings further exacerbate these fears, leaving individuals hesitant to come forward. Yet, King Kafu persists in his mission, advocating for transparency and support from the government to reassure individuals seeking to renounce their criminal pasts.

In his tireless efforts to foster change, Kafu underscores the importance of instilling hope and trust among disillusioned youths. While the journey ahead may be fraught with challenges, his unwavering commitment to empowering individuals to break free from the cycle of violence serves as a beacon of hope in Kenya’s battle against crime.
