Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a pioneering Bachelor’s degree programme in Food Safety and Quality Management. The initiative, led by IGNOU’s School of Agriculture (SoA), adopts an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) format.
Prospective candidates applying for this programme must have completed their Class 12 education with Science and Agriculture subjects. The course fees amount to Rs 6,000 annually, inclusive of registration and development charges.
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will be equipped for diverse career opportunities in the field of food safety and quality management. Potential roles include Food Safety Team Leader, Supervisor, or Manager within the food industry and hospitality institutions, Technical Officer in Quality Control departments, Food Safety Officer or Inspector in regulatory bodies, Food Safety Auditor in certification and inspection organizations, and roles such as Trainer or Counsellor in training and counselling bodies. Additionally, graduates can contribute as members of supply chain management teams in retail chains or industries, or pursue self-employment opportunities as certifying professionals, counsellors, trainers, or auditors.
The programme’s launch addresses the growing demand for skilled professionals in food safety and quality management, driven by increasing concerns over food-borne illnesses and adherence to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This legislation underscores the need for a well-trained workforce capable of ensuring compliance and maintaining high standards across the food industry.
Global shifts in food production methods, international trade dynamics, technological advancements, and heightened awareness of health considerations further emphasize the critical role of food safety professionals. This programme aims to meet these evolving industry demands by preparing graduates to effectively navigate and contribute to the evolving landscape of food safety and quality management.
