  • ICMR raises concerns about high sugar in sugarcane juice.
  • New guidelines propose limits on sugar in packaged foods.

In the summer, many people enjoy refreshing drinks, and sugarcane juice is a popular choice because of its taste and perceived health benefits. However, recent guidelines from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Nutrition have raised concerns about its healthiness, particularly during the hot months. According to these guidelines, sugarcane juice contains a high amount of sugar—about 13 to 15 grams per 100 milliliters—which can be harmful if consumed in large quantities.

Furthermore, the ICMR has introduced dietary guidelines for the first time to monitor and control the sugar content in packaged foods and beverages across India. These guidelines distinguish between natural sugars, which occur naturally in foods, and added sugars, which are included during processing. The new rules suggest that energy from natural sugars in solid foods should not exceed 5 percent of total intake and 10 percent for total sugar (Added + Natural), and for beverages, it should be 10 and 15 percent for natural and total sugar respectively. These guidelines are just proposed and not applied in the country.

Packaged food experts have pointed out that these guidelines were made without consulting them and are theoretical and could make even basic, commonly consumed foods appear unhealthy. The real test will be seeing if and how these guidelines are actually put into practice.

Added sugar is one of the worst ingredients in foods when consumed in excess, leading to serious health issues like high blood pressure, liver problems, and high cholesterol. To combat these risks, experts recommend replacing sugar with healthier alternatives, such as honey. One of the best and most trusted brands in the Indian market for 100% natural honey with no added sugar is Dabur Honey. By choosing honey over sugar, you can enjoy a variety of health benefits while reducing the risk of developing severe health conditions.
