Government Intervention Leads to Positive Change
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the lifting of the suspension on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect this Sunday, 28 January. The decision comes after a series of government-led actions, including the dismissal of the sports minister and the passage of a resolution by the Sri Lanka Parliament. The SLC, which had been under suspension since November, faced allegations of severe breaches in its membership obligations.
The ICC had previously identified significant concerns regarding the autonomy of SLC’s management and the apparent government interference in cricket’s governance, regulation, and administration within Sri Lanka. “The Board have been monitoring the situation since the suspension and is now satisfied that SLC is no longer in breach of membership obligations,” the ICC stated, indicating a resolution to the issues that led to the suspension.
Parliamentary Resolution and Ministerial Changes
The turning point in this saga came with the Sri Lanka Parliament’s unanimous resolution, supported by both ruling and opposition parties, calling for the sacking of the SLC Board. This resolution followed the Court of Appeal’s decision to restore the SLC management headed by Shammi Silva, previously dismissed by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe.
In response to the mounting controversy and the parliamentary resolution, Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe took decisive action by sacking Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe. This move was seen as a significant step towards addressing the ICC’s concerns about government interference in the cricket board’s affairs.
