The Origin and Benefits

Rice water, or ‘Yeoju,’ has been a cornerstone in Korean beauty rituals for centuries. It is believed that women in the Joseon dynasty, known for their luminous skin, regularly used rice water as a facial cleanser and toner. The starch in rice water is rich in vitamins B, C, and E, along with minerals and eight essential amino acids that promote skin health.

Preparation of Korean Rice Water

To make authentic Korean rice water, you need only two ingredients: rice and water. The type of rice is pivotal – short or medium-grain rice, like those used in Korean cuisine, is ideal.

Rinsing: Begin by rinsing a half cup of rice under cold water to remove impurities and surface starch. This step is crucial for preventing any potential skin irritation.

Soaking: After rinsing, place the rice in a bowl and cover it with about a cup of water. Let it soak for 30 minutes to an hour. This allows the nutrients to seep into the water, creating a milky-looking solution.

Straining: Strain the rice water into a clean bottle or jar. The rice can be cooked or stored for future use.

Fermentation (Optional): For enhanced benefits, some prefer to ferment the rice water. Leave the strained water at room temperature for a day or two until it develops a sour smell, indicating fermentation. Fermented rice water is more potent, with a higher concentration of antioxidants.

Application and Usage

Cleanser or Toner: Use rice water to cleanse your face in the morning and evening. Soak a cotton pad in the rice water and gently massage it over your face. It helps in tightening skin and shrinking pores.

Facial Mask: Soak a paper mask or a clean cloth in rice water and apply it to your face for 15-20 minutes for a hydrating mask.
Hair Rinse: Rice water can also be used as a hair rinse after shampooing, imparting shine and strength to the hair.
Storage and Shelf Life

Fresh rice water should be stored in the refrigerator and used within a week. Fermented rice water, due to its higher acidity, can last up to two weeks when refrigerated.

Korean rice water is a simple, natural, and cost-effective way to achieve radiant skin and healthy hair. Its roots in traditional beauty practices and backed by modern skincare science, this age-old remedy offers a gentle yet powerful solution for those seeking a natural glow.
