When water spills on a laptop, it might get badly damaged. But quick action can save it. Fixing it can be hard and might need experience. At home, first use a dry towel and microfiber cloth to deal with the spill. These simple steps can help in protecting your laptop from water damage.

1. Immediately Turn Off The Laptop

When your laptop gets wet, turn it off right away. Press and hold the power button to shut it down. Save your important files quickly. Then, unplug the laptop from its charger to stop power. Take off any parts that are easy to remove, like a mouse or flash drives. This helps protect the inside parts from damage.

2. Remove Access Liquid

If your laptop is wet, wipe off any extra liquid. This lowers the risk of electric shock and stops more liquid damage. Use a dry towel or turn the laptop upside-down. Keep it facing down while cleaning so the liquid doesn’t reach the inside parts.

3. Remove Battery

After unplugging your laptop from the power adapter, take out the battery. This stops liquid from reaching the battery, which can be dangerous. Turn your laptop upside-down to remove the battery by sliding a lock and pulling it out. But, on some laptops like Macbooks, the battery is inside. For these, you need to unscrew the bottom part of the laptop to get to the battery connector.

4. Place Laptop On the Towel

Put a dry towel on a flat table. Open your laptop like a book and put it upside down on the towel, making a tent shape. This helps it dry faster. A warm fan can speed up drying. Leave the laptop like this for a few days in a dry, warm place.

5. Remove Hardware

Take off your laptop’s bottom cover and remove any parts you can, like the hard drive, RAM, and wifi module. Wipe any water off them. If you’re not sure how to remove these parts, it’s better to take your laptop to a professional. Use a microfiber cloth to soak up any extra water inside. If you have a laptop that can’t be opened, like a MacBook, put it upside down and go to a repair center quickly.

6. Remove Keyboard

If you spill a drink on your laptop, it might go inside through the keyboard. First, turn off the laptop, then disconnect the keyboard. Check if the liquid reached the motherboard. Clean the keyboard with a dry, lint-free cloth. If it’s sticky, use alcohol to clean it. Then, put the keyboard upside down on a towel next to your laptop. This helps in drying and cleaning it properly.

7. Let It Dry

Let your laptop dry for at least one day, but two days is better. Keep it in a warm, dry spot. Using a dehumidifier or a warm fan can help it dry faster. This is important to make sure it’s really dry inside before you use it again.

8. Wash The Motherboard

If you know about technology, you can clean your laptop’s motherboard to remove sticky stuff and stop rusting. You need a special cleaning machine and liquid, which are expensive. It’s usually cheaper to take the motherboard to a computer repair shop for cleaning.

9. Reassemble The Laptop

After two days, put the parts back into your laptop the same way you took them out. Connect the battery last to avoid static damage. Hopefully, these steps will have saved your laptop and it will work fine. If it turns on, test everything like sound, screen, USB ports, etc., to make sure all is working well.

If your laptop doesn’t start, or the screen, sound, USB ports, or wifi aren’t working right, you should take it to a professional for liquid damage repair.
