Maintaining good eye health is essential, especially during the monsoon season when eyes are more susceptible to infections. Common issues such as conjunctivitis and styes become prevalent, making it crucial to adopt proper eye care routines to stay safe. Dr. Nidhi Jyoti Shetty, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital in Bhandup, shared valuable insights with HT Lifestyle on how to establish healthy morning habits for optimal eye care.

Dr. Shetty emphasized that the condition of one’s eyes in the morning is often a reflection of how well they were cared for the night before. She provided five essential morning habits that can significantly contribute to maintaining good eye health.

Proper Eye Hygiene the Night Before

The foundation for healthy eyes in the morning begins with good hygiene practices the night before. Washing your face thoroughly to remove dirt, oil, or makeup that can accumulate during the day is crucial. Applying a gentle eye cream or moisturizer around the eyes can prevent dryness and reduce puffiness, resulting in a refreshed appearance in the morning.

Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes

Refraining from rubbing your eyes upon waking is vital. Rubbing can introduce dirt and bacteria from your hands, potentially causing irritation or infections. If your eyes feel itchy or dry, it is advisable to use eye drops recommended by an eye care professional instead of rubbing them.

Limit Screen Time

It is essential to resist the urge to immediately check your phone or other digital devices upon waking. The blue light emitted from screens can strain your eyes, especially in the morning when they are adjusting to light. Limiting screen time early in the day can help reduce eye strain.

Morning Walk for Eye Health

Spending time outdoors in the morning can be beneficial for your eyes. Exposure to natural sunlight provides important cues to regulate your circadian rhythm, which in turn affects overall health, including eye health. A morning walk can help your eyes adjust to natural light and improve overall well-being.

Nutritious Breakfast for Eye Health

Eating a balanced breakfast rich in vitamins and antioxidants is essential for maintaining healthy eyes. Foods like blueberries and strawberries, which are high in antioxidants, can help protect your eyes from damage. Additionally, green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale contain lutein and zeaxanthin, important nutrients for eye health.

By following these expert-recommended habits, individuals can significantly enhance their eye health, especially during the monsoon season when infections are more common. Adopting these practices can lead to better eye care and overall well-being.
