Greenland is officially the world’s largest island that is not a continent. Home to 56,000 people, Greenland has its own extensive local government, but it is also part of the Realm of Denmark.
Greenland and Denmark, despite being 3500 km apart, have shared political and cultural ties for about 1000 years. Greenland, once a Danish colony, became a district in 1953, gaining its own local government while also sending two representatives to the Danish Parliament, the Folketing. This unique arrangement maintains a special connection between the two, blending autonomy and shared governance.
A Big Island Full of Ice

Greenland is a huge island that sits way up north on our planet. It’s the biggest island in the whole wide world! Imagine a place so big that it’s almost as big as a continent. But, even though it’s called Greenland, it’s not very green at all. Most of it is covered in a thick, icy blanket all year round.
Where is Greenland ?

Greenland is located in a part of the world we call the Arctic. It’s way up north, close to the North Pole. So, as you can imagine, it’s a pretty chilly place to be! It’s not connected to any other land, floating alone in the ocean, and its closest neighbors are Canada to the west and Iceland to the east.
Who Lives There ?

Even though Greenland is so big, not many people live there. The people who do live there are known as Greenlanders. They are super strong and brave to live in such a cold and remote place! Most Greenlanders are part of an indigenous group known as the Inuit. They have lived there for a very long time and know how to survive in the harsh, icy environment.
Nature in Greenland

Greenland’s natural beauty is breathtaking. As the people of Greenland often say, “You feel very small” in magnificent surroundings that include glaciers, fjords, mountains and amazing fauna.
Icebergs are some of the most spectacular natural formations in Greenland. These majestic floating masses of ice are sometimes several stories high. Icebergs are the result of the constant movement of the Greenlandic ice cap. Only about 10 % of an iceberg is above the sea.
The People of Greenland
Greenland has around 56,000 inhabitants. They mostly live in the 20 % of the country that is not covered by ice and snow.
The first humans to set foot on Greenland arrived some 4,000-5,000 years ago from the North American continent via Canada, after the sea froze in the narrow strait at Thule in Northern Greenland. No less than six different Inuit cultures have migrated in distinct waves.
People in Greenland come from the Thule culture, arriving around 1200s. Vikings also lived there but disappeared around 1500. It’s very cold in Greenland, so people live near the coast and usually fish and hunt to live because growing crops is really hard with the chilly weather and icy land.
Animals of Greenland

Despite the cold, many animals call Greenland home. Polar bears roam the icy lands, while whales swim in the chilly waters. Seals, walruses, and various birds also live in and around the island. These animals are well adapted to the cold and can live happily even when it’s freezing.
The Northern Lights : A Magical Sky Show

One of the most beautiful things about Greenland is the Northern Lights. This is a natural light show in the sky, and it’s absolutely magical. The sky lights up with colors like green, pink, and purple, dancing and shimmering above. It’s like nature’s own fireworks display and can be seen in Greenland during the winter months.
The Ice Sheet: A Giant Frozen Sea

Greenland is famous for its enormous ice sheet. This is a gigantic area of ice that covers most of the island. It’s so big that it’s second only to the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The ice is really, really thick – in some places, it’s over 3 kilometers thick! That’s super thick and it has been there for a very, very long time.
A Place of Mystery and Adventure

Greenland is a place of mystery and adventure. It’s so big, so remote, and so different from anywhere else on Earth. People who visit Greenland can explore the icy landscapes, see the amazing wildlife, and learn about the incredible Inuit culture. It’s a place where you can see and experience things that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
A Unique and Beautiful Island

So, Greenland is a very special place. It’s the world’s largest island, with lots of ice, amazing animals, and brave people. It’s a land of beauty, mystery, and adventure, where the skies light up with magical colors and the landscapes are like something from another planet. Even though it’s a bit cold, Greenland has a warm place in the hearts of those who know it.
