The Trade Related Entrepreneurship Development Assistance Scheme (TREAD) is making significant strides in promoting women entrepreneurship in India. Launched by the Government of India, this initiative aims to empower women by providing crucial financial assistance and support services, addressing the barriers they often face in accessing credit and resources for their entrepreneurial ventures.

Financial Assistance: Bridging the Credit Gap

Under the TREAD scheme, the government offers up to 30% of the total project cost as financial assistance, with the remaining 70% to be provided by banks. This support is designed to alleviate the financial burden on women entrepreneurs who typically encounter challenges in securing loans due to stringent banking procedures and collateral requirements. By covering a substantial portion of the project cost, TREAD helps women overcome these financial barriers and facilitates their entry into the business world.

Objectives and Services: Comprehensive Support for Entrepreneurs

The primary objective of the TREAD scheme is to generate sustainable employment opportunities for economically disadvantaged women by enhancing their technical skills and entrepreneurial capabilities. The scheme provides a suite of support services, including:

Training: Equipping women with the skills needed to manage and grow their businesses.

Counseling: Offering guidance and mentorship to help women navigate entrepreneurial challenges.

Credit Facilitation: Assisting in accessing and managing credit to fund business ventures.

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a critical role in the implementation of the scheme, disbursing credit and ensuring responsible management of funds. Their involvement is essential in reaching out to and supporting the target beneficiaries.

Eligibility and Application Process: Joining the Scheme

NGOs interested in participating in the TREAD scheme must apply by submitting a detailed application. The application process requires NGOs to provide:

Experience Details: Information on their track record in managing development projects for poor women.

Identity Proof: Valid documentation to establish the NGO’s credibility.

Audited Accounts: Financial statements from the last three years.

Other Documents: Any additional relevant documents that support the application.

Applications are to be submitted at the nearest Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development Institute, which will review and process the submissions.

Impact and Achievements: Transforming Lives and Businesses

Since its inception, the TREAD scheme has had a profound impact on women entrepreneurs across the country. It has enabled numerous women to start and expand their businesses, contributing to:

Sustainable Employment: Creating long-term job opportunities, particularly for marginalized women.

Economic Growth: Enhancing the economic participation of women and fostering overall growth in the business sector.

The success of TREAD is evident in the numerous stories of women who have leveraged the scheme to overcome financial hurdles and establish thriving businesses. The scheme not only empowers women but also contributes to the broader economic development.
