The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of life for senior citizens through the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY). This comprehensive scheme aims to promote the welfare and dignity of elderly individuals across India. By providing essential services and support, AVYAY seeks to ensure that senior citizens can live with respect and comfort.
Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens
A key component of AVYAY is the Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens, which provides crucial financial assistance to Non-Governmental and Voluntary Organizations. These organizations operate Senior Citizens’ Homes and Continuous Care Homes that offer vital amenities including shelter, nutrition, healthcare, and recreational activities. Currently, 604 such homes are supported under this scheme, with 25 specifically dedicated to elderly women. This initiative ensures that indigent senior citizens have access to dignified living conditions.
Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana: Assisting with Age-Related Disabilities
The Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) is another significant initiative under AVYAY, aimed at enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens experiencing age-related disabilities. Through organized camps across the country, RVY distributes assisted living devices such as hearing aids, walking sticks, and vision aids. To date, over 364,001 senior citizens have benefited from these devices through 354 camps, helping to restore normalcy and independence in their daily lives.
Elderline: Providing Immediate Support
To address the need for accessible support services, the government has launched Elderline, a national helpline (14567) operational daily from 8 am to 8 pm across 31 States/UTs. This toll-free helpline provides free information, emotional support, guidance, and field interventions. Elderline plays a critical role in offering prompt assistance in cases of abuse or emergencies involving senior citizens, ensuring they receive timely help when needed.
State Action Plan for Senior Citizens: Comprehensive Care
The State Action Plan for Senior Citizens (SAPSrC) involves collaboration between the government and various states and union territories. SAPSrC focuses on training Geriatric Caregivers, conducting specialized healthcare drives such as cataract surgeries, and implementing state-specific welfare activities. These initiatives are essential in addressing the unique needs of senior citizens, especially those from economically vulnerable backgrounds.
Senior-care Ageing Growth Engine (SAGE): Fostering Innovation
AVYAY’s Senior-care Ageing Growth Engine (SAGE) promotes innovation in elderly care by supporting start-ups that develop products and services tailored to senior citizens’ needs. Start-ups receive equity support of up to ₹1 crore per project, creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurial solutions in geriatric care. This initiative encourages the development of new and effective solutions to improve the lives of the elderly.
Geriatric Caregivers Training
The training of Geriatric Caregivers is a critical aspect of AVYAY, aimed at bridging the gap in professional care for the elderly. Provided by the National Institute of Social Defence, this training equips caregivers with the skills needed to meet the diverse needs of senior citizens, ensuring they receive high-quality care and companionship.
Commitment to Senior Citizens
The Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana represents the government’s steadfast commitment to supporting and honoring the contributions of senior citizens. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, AVYAY ensures that elderly individuals in India can age with dignity, respect, and comprehensive care. The scheme’s various components work together to create a robust support system for senior citizens, improving their overall well-being and quality of life.
