The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens through the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), a comprehensive scheme aimed at promoting the welfare and dignity of elderly individuals across the country.
Under the flagship Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens component of AVYAY, the government provides crucial financial assistance to Non-Governmental and Voluntary Organizations to operate Senior Citizens’ Homes and Continuous Care Homes. These facilities offer essential amenities such as shelter, nutrition, healthcare, and recreational activities, free of cost to indigent senior citizens. Currently, 604 Senior Citizens’ Homes, including 25 dedicated to elderly women, benefit from this support, ensuring a dignified living environment.
Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) Enhances Accessibility to Assisted Living Devices
Another pivotal initiative under AVYAY is the RVY, aimed at assisting senior citizens with age-related disabilities or infirmities. Through organized camps across the country, RVY distributes assisted living devices like hearing aids, walking sticks, and vision aids to restore normalcy in daily functions. To date, over 3,64,001 senior citizens have been aided through 354 such camps, significantly improving their quality of life.
Elderline Provides Essential Support and Intervention
Recognizing the need for accessible support services, the government launched Elderline, a national helpline (14567), operational from 8 am to 8 pm every day across 31 States/UTs. This toll-free helpline offers free information, emotional support, guidance, and field interventions, ensuring prompt assistance in cases of abuse or emergencies among senior citizens.
State Action Plan for Senior Citizens (SAPSrC) Focuses on Holistic Care
Through SAPSrC, the government collaborates with States and Union Territories to train Geriatric Caregivers, conduct specialized healthcare drives like cataract surgeries, and implement state-specific welfare activities. These efforts are pivotal in addressing the unique needs of senior citizens, particularly those from economically vulnerable backgrounds.
Senior-care Ageing Growth Engine (SAGE) Promotes Innovation
To encourage innovative solutions for elderly care, AVYAY’s SAGE initiative supports start-ups developing products and services catering to senior citizens’ needs. Start-ups receive equity support of up to Rs. 1 crore per project, fostering a conducive environment for entrepreneurial solutions in geriatric care.
Geriatric Caregivers Training Ensures Skilled Care
The initiative to train Geriatric Caregivers aims to bridge the gap in professional care for the elderly. With training provided by the National Institute of Social Defence, these caregivers are equipped to meet the diverse and dynamic needs of senior citizens, ensuring comprehensive care and companionship.
Government’s Commitment to Senior Citizens
The Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana stands as a testament to the government’s unwavering dedication to honoring and supporting the invaluable contributions of senior citizens. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, AVYAY ensures that elderly individuals in India can age with dignity, respect, and comprehensive care.
