The Indian government has laid out an ambitious legislative agenda for the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, scheduled to commence on December 4 and continue until December 22. Among the key bills listed are proposals to extend provisions of the women’s reservation act to Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry, as well as three bills aimed at replacing existing criminal laws.
In a bulletin released by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the government outlined a total of 18 bills to be discussed during the session. One of the notable bills aims to increase the strength of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly from 107 to 114. This move is intended to provide representation to Kashmiri migrants, displaced persons from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Scheduled Tribes in the region.
The women’s reservation act, which seeks to empower women in political leadership, is set to be extended to the regions of Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry. This step is significant in promoting gender equality and women’s participation in the political sphere.
Additionally, the government has included the presentation, discussion, and voting on the first batch of supplementary demands for grants for the fiscal year 2023-24 in the session’s agenda.
Meanwhile, ahead of winter session of Parliament, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi is scheduled to hold a meeting with the floor leaders of political parties in both houses of Parliament on December 2, 2023. This All Party Meeting, taking place at the Parliament Library Building in New Delhi, is expected to set the stage for the Winter Session’s discussions and priorities.
It is pertinent to note that the Winter Session of Parliament is set to feature a total of 15 sittings spread over a period of 19 days, with the possibility of the session concluding on December 22, 2023. While the nation gears up for this significant legislative session, anticipation is high for the deliberations and outcomes that will shape India’s governance and policies in the coming months.
