Google announces massive undersea cable project linking US and India, boosting AI connectivity, public services, and digital infrastructure transformation.

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai has outlined a bold vision for India’s artificial intelligence future, announcing a major undersea cable project connecting the United States directly to India. Speaking during the India AI Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Pichai emphasized that India stands at the threshold of what he described as an extraordinary technological transformation. He said artificial intelligence represents the most significant platform shift of this generation and could reshape how governments deliver public services, how industries operate, and how citizens access opportunities.

The proposed subsea cable route will significantly enhance connectivity between the United States and India while extending reach into the Southern Hemisphere. This infrastructure upgrade is designed to support high-capacity data transmission required for next-generation artificial intelligence applications. According to Pichai, strengthening digital highways is essential to unlocking India’s AI-driven economic growth and governance efficiency.

India’s rapid digitalization, combined with its vast and diverse population, creates unique opportunities for scalable artificial intelligence solutions. Pichai stated that India is not merely adopting AI but shaping its future trajectory. He highlighted that India’s multilingual ecosystem, digital public infrastructure, and strong developer base form a foundation unmatched globally.

AI as a Transformational Force for Public Services and National Growth

Pichai described artificial intelligence as the biggest technological transition of modern times, comparing its potential impact to the internet revolution. He stressed that AI can directly address large-scale national challenges. In healthcare, AI tools can improve diagnostic accuracy and assist doctors in identifying diseases earlier. In agriculture, AI-driven real-time alerts can guide farmers about crop health, weather patterns, and market trends, improving productivity and income stability.

He further explained that AI could enhance governance efficiency by analyzing massive datasets to improve policy implementation. Public service delivery systems could become more responsive, predictive, and citizen-centric. Digital platforms powered by AI may help governments identify gaps in welfare schemes and ensure targeted distribution.

India’s digital public infrastructure, including identity systems and payment platforms, was highlighted as a critical enabler of inclusive AI deployment. Pichai noted that India’s ability to implement large-scale digital systems provides a practical environment for testing AI applications that can later be replicated globally.

Trust, however, remains central to AI’s expansion. Pichai emphasized the importance of safety, transparency, and responsible deployment. AI systems must function across different Indian languages and local contexts to ensure inclusivity. He underlined that trust is built when technology consistently delivers real-world benefits. Responsible innovation, ethical frameworks, and accountability mechanisms are necessary to ensure that AI development aligns with societal interests.

India-America Connect Initiative and Expanding AI Infrastructure

A major highlight of Pichai’s address was the announcement of the India-America Connect Initiative. This project aims to deploy new subsea cable routes that will substantially strengthen digital connectivity between India and the United States. Enhanced bandwidth capacity is expected to support advanced computing workloads essential for artificial intelligence research, cloud services, and data-intensive applications.

The subsea cable project will not only improve speed and reliability but also position India as a strategic digital hub linking multiple global regions. With rising AI workloads, cloud computing demands, and data processing needs, such connectivity investments are viewed as foundational infrastructure for the digital economy.

Pichai reiterated Google’s earlier commitment to invest $15 billion in establishing a dedicated AI hub in India. The hub will include advanced computing power, high-performance data centers, and an international subsea cable gateway. This infrastructure expansion is expected to generate employment, encourage innovation, and attract global technology partnerships.

Beyond infrastructure, Google is launching ambitious skilling initiatives. A new AI Professional Certificate Program will be available in both English and Hindi, aiming to equip students and early-career professionals with job-ready AI skills. The program focuses on practical training to prepare India’s workforce for the emerging AI-driven economy.

Google is also collaborating with Karma Yogi Bharat to train over 20 million public servants in AI tools and digital governance frameworks. Additionally, partnerships with Atal Tinkering Labs will introduce AI technologies to 10,000 schools, nurturing innovation at the grassroots level.

A $30 million AI for Science Impact Challenge has been launched to accelerate global research using artificial intelligence. Pichai stressed that partnerships with Indian Institutes of Technology, government agencies, and local institutions are crucial for scaling AI responsibly. Institutions that understand community-level realities are essential to ensuring that AI tools are inclusive and context-aware.

Pichai, who is currently in India attending the India AI Summit 2026 in New Delhi, has become a central figure in discussions around India’s digital future. His announcements signal a long-term strategic alignment between Google and India’s AI ambitions, reinforcing India’s emerging role as a global leader in artificial intelligence innovation.
